Description

Phyllis Wheatley House. As noted by Grace Wilson Evans herself, the Phyllis Wheatley House first started out as an Association for African American youth in 1922. Taken over by the Indiana State Teachers College in 1934, the Phyllis Wheatley House served as a dormitory for African American women until around 1945. All African American female students attending the school who did not live in Terre Haute, were expected to live in the House if room was available. Phyllis Wheatley housed 13 women and also served as a Home Economics Practice House for African American female students. The hall had no cafeteria associated with the Hall.
