HOME ECONOMICS BUILDING, 1956 FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCES, 2000 JOHN W. MOORE WELCOME CENTER, 2012 ARCHITECT: Miller, Vrydagh, Miller of Terre Haute CONTRACTOR: G.W. North Construction Co. DEDICATED: November 9, 1956 HISTORY: The John W. Moore Welcome Center was the first classroom building built off of the original quadrangle that bounded the ISU campus from its earliest days. The building was considered one of the nation's best planned structures for home economics education. The building housed laboratories, classrooms, and student lockers. It also had an exhibit hall, seminar and meeting rooms, faculty offices and lounge, living room, and dining room. Today, the building houses the Office of Admissions, New Student Transitions Program, and University Testing. Renovated and reopened in 2012, the John W. Moore Welcome Center is strategically located at the core of campus and welcomes prospective students and their guests through the "front door" of the University. As guests arrive, campus hosts in a living room setting greet them where they are able to immediately immerse themselves into interactive technology on 12 transparent touch screens located on the walls surrounding the room. Students and guests can use the screens individually to learn about the University's rich history, academic programs, and services, or they can simply sit back and watch an ever-changing array of choreographed videos and photographs that are interconnected from screen to screen. Following an introductory video in the state-of-the-art 50-seat theater, guests tour campus with student guides before returning to the center to meet individually with hosts who can answer a broad range of questions related to the University and its history.
