Abstract

This single case qualitative research study explored the experiences of a literacy coach in a Reading First School in Indiana. Specifically, the study sought to determine the literacy coach's perceptions and experiences as the literacy coach in the elementary school. Informal interviews and observations resulted in findings that indicate the characteristics and competencies of an effective literacy coach. Two overarching themes of characteristics and competencies emerged. Under characteristics, the themes of credentials, knowledge of research base, knowledge of responsibilities, deep understanding of context, and marshaling resources were discussed. Under competencies, the themes of building rapport and trust, promoting collaboration, modeling and coaching, systematic coaching, professional development and organization were discussed. Finally, barriers and facilitating factors were identified and recommendations for further research are provided.
