Abstract

Using a qualitative approach, this study provided an analysis of the language learning experiences of Latin born professional baseball players from the Los Angeles Dodgers, Cleveland Indians, and Minnesota Twins organizations. Using focus group interviews with follow up communication and artifacts, data were collected and analyzed to find common themes. The emergent themes were then used to shed light on the language learning experiences of these players. The themes that emerged from this study were the actual English abilities of these players; their use of individual study to transcend gaps in instruction; their motivations, attitudes and struggles for independence; aspects of their culture and their process of acculturation; and the use of their community of practice to learn English. In addition to these emergent themes, a description of the programs provided by these three teams was developed. Participants from this study provided information to establish a better understanding of the language programs in professional baseball, which can be used to modify and improve the experience for future players.
