Abstract

The purpose of this study was to attempt to validate Rorschach's (1942) hypothesis of a relationship between Imagery types and Rorschach EB, M, Sum weighted C, and what Exner (1986) refers to as EA. In keeping with this purpose, relationships between cognitive style of imaging, vividness of visual imagery, and control of visual imagery and Rorschach EB, M, Sum weighted C, and EA were explored. The sample consisted of 25 males and 35 females attending a midwestern university. Eighteen of the participants were undergraduates and 42 were graduate students. Results indicated no relationship between any of the imagery variables and any of the Rorschach variables utilized in this study. Correlations computed between the 15 items on the Verbalizer Visualizer Questionnaire and Rorschach EB, M, Sum weighted C, and EA yielded significant relationships. Significant positive relationships were found between endorsement of the items "I enjoy doing work that requires the use of words" and Rorschach M and EA, "I enjoy learning new words" and Rorschach Sum weighted C and EA, and "I can easily think of synonyms for new words" and Rorschach M and EA. Results indicated that Rorschach EB, M, Sum weighted C, and EA were not valid measures of cognitive style of imaging, vividness of visual imagery, or control of visual imagery. Results also indicated that Rorschach EB and Jungian introversion/extraversion were independent constructs. Some support was found for Exner's (1978) interpretation of EA as an index of accessible resources.
