Abstract
This descriptive research investigated the relationship between the presence or absence of certain supervisory behaviors with supervisee perception of supervisor expertness, attractiveness, and trustworthiness. This research also investigated the relationship between supervisee perception of supervisory behavior. This research was a replication of Heppner and Handley (1982). Participants in this study were students and their supervisors for beginning practicum classes at the cooperating midwestern universities. The forty supervisory dyads met for a minimum of one hour of supervision per week for the duration of the semester. Two instruments, the Supervisor Rating Form (SRF; Heppner & Handley, 1982), which assessed perceptions of expertness, attractiveness, and trustworthiness, and the Supervision Questionnaire (SQ; Worthington & Roehlke, 1979), which assessed the frequency of varying supervisory behaviors, were administered to the students. The supervisors were given only the SQ. Data collection was accomplished during the final two weeks of the semester at each university. Pearson Product Moment correlation coefficients were computed to investigate the relationship between each behavior (as assessed by the SQ) and the perception of expertness, attractiveness, and trustworthiness (as assessed by the SRF). Additionally, correlations were also computed between supervisor and supervisee assessment of the frequency of occurrence of supervisory behavior. It was concluded that there is a significant relationship between certain supervisory behaviors and the supervisee's perception of the supervisor as expert, attractive, and trustworthy. It was concluded that the results of this study confirm and support the work of Heppner and Handley (1982). Further, it was suggested that validation of the Supervision Questionnaire by direct observation and examination of the treatment effect of repeated administration of the SQ are worthy of potential investigations.
