Abstract

This study examined the relationship between the condition of school building conditions and the achievenh:>11 l on the Indiana Statewide Test for Educational Progress. Selected high schools from the state of Indiana with various enrollments and socio-economic factors were used in this study. Building condition scores were determined by the Commonwealth Assessment of Physical Environment which was completed by building level Principals of 50 s0.lected high schools from a possible sample of 244. The survey was mailed to building level Principals and outlined 25 questions regarding building facility conditions in ar.eas of structural and cosmetic conditions. Principals from the participating schools were asked to complete the survey in order to rate their school facility condition. Those results were then scored to determine an overall building condition score for each building. Those scores were then used to group schools as sub-standard, standard and above standard. Student achievement scores for each school participating were determined by using the total battery score on the Indiana Statewide Test for Educational Progress (ISTEP) exam for the 2004-2005 school year. This study found that there was a significant relationship between school facility condition and stude11t achi~v~ment as measured by the Spearman Correlation Coefficient.
