Abstract
Vigo County, Indiana is an extremely interesting area for herpetological studyo Its geographical location allows for the interplay of faunal elements from east, west, north, and south (Smith and minton, 1957) and its physiography permits investigation of the relations of terrain and glacial geology to herpetofaunal distribution. Blatchley (1891, 1899) published two papers on the amphibians and reptiles of the county and Allyn and Shockley (1938) reported on the county's salamandersa The present paper has the following objectives: to determine which species occur or have recently occurred in Vigo County; to determine amphibian and reptile distribution in the county; to present some life history information; to bring together the literature on the herpetology of the area; and to provide a basis for further study of the herpetofauna of Vigo Countyo This paper has been written in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the master of Arts degree at Indiana State University.
