Abstract

As the twenty-first century begins, a new breed of individuals is entering and becoming successful in the political arena. The electorate has l1l usually been chosen proven, career-oriented politicians as their elected officials. This has all changed recently. Celebrities such as athletes, actors, ash·onauts, military leaders, and even professional wrestlers are rmu1ing in political elections and winning. Dwight Eisenhower and Ronald Reagan are probably the most successful celebrities in politics. However, a celebrity in politics was quite rare when they became involved. Since the 1990's celebrities have begun to run for political office more frequently than ever before, particularly in the United States Congress. What explains the sudden influx of celebrities holding state and national office? The current political atmosphere can be attributed to the rapid growth of celebrities choosing politics as their second career. Voter turnout fluctuates, ticket-splitting is common, and party affiliation is down. The general public feels disenchanted with the current state of politics. An election in which a celebrity is involved seems to generate much more interest than an election in IV which one is not This has helped, along with a celebrity being strategic in the conditions of a particular election he/she plans on getting involved in. Are conditions in the "new" political atmosphere favorable for celebrity success in elections? How does a celebrity assimilate to the political lifestyle once elected to office? This new celebrity phenomenon is becoming more common. An understanding of a celebrity's behavior while running for office, as well as his behavior in political office must be researched so we may understand their impact in politics.
