Abstract

This creative thesis, entitled Carnival Glass: A Collection of Poems, contains a series of poems representative of the writer's expanding vision and growth as a poet. An introduction precedes the work, wherein the writer attempts to draw explicit connections between the tangible world and the page on which it is recorded and recreated. The subject matter of these poems reflects aspects of daily living filtered through the writer's personal experience. Poems in the collection are grouped under headings that signify four major areas of content: "Keepsake-Breakables," with poems examining the relationship between self and family; "Worn But Polished Surfaces," with poems exploring emerging sense of identity and romantic relationships; "Sea Glass, or Shards," with poems engaging the power of memory and role of faith through trial; and "Iridescent Baubles," with poems of a more playful nature. A brief list of works referenced in the introduction, along with some others that have especially influenced and inspired the writer, follows the collection.
