Abstract
Statement of the problem. It was the purpose of this study (1) to determine the desires of the elementary school teachers employed ln the Metropolitan School District of Washington Township, Marion County, Indiana, as to the sources of words for each of the grade levels one through six; (2) to use the majority opinion in the foregoing survey to establish word lists for each grade level; (3) to sample creative writing at given grade levels to detect number and kind of spelling errors made; (4) to compare these writings with others or a later date when emphasis in teaching spelling has been shifted from the list approach to a practical-use approach; (5) to supplement common types of spelling; activities with greater variety; and (6) to recommend further changes in the spelling program if such changes appear to be warranted. :-·ecommcnci further changes :~}i ti;c ::.pcll_'i. 11;~: proe;ram if such
