Abstract

The study investigates the function of development offices in public higher education institutions: What are the functions of the office with repect to planning, activities, resources, and evaluation? Which functions do chief development officers view as most important? The population included the Development Director of all public state universities that are members of CASE with enrollments between 6,000 and 20,000. A questionnaire was mailed to all 77 universities. Participants were asked to indicate time spent and importance of each function. tests were utilized to treat the data statistically. Conclusions: Two t- 1. The literature and demographic data suggest that there is no common undergraduate or graduate degree of chief development officers. 2. The functions of a development office in selected public higher education institutions are planning, activities, resources, and evaluation. Respondents to the questionnaire generally indicated that all of these functions are important to the development office. 3. Chief development officers view the functions of planning, activities, resources, and evaluation as more important than the amount of time being spent on them.
