Abstract
This study analyzes and summarizes interviews with living past presidents of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), thus providing an oral history of this national association. Where periods of NAEYC are not represented by a living past president, Governing Board Meeting minutes and issues of NAEYC's journal were studied. To ensure continuity in the oral history, a summary of this information is included for the periods when past presidents are deceased. Through these interviews and minutes, an historical perspective was obtained which reveals the social, political, and economic atmosphere of the respective periods of presidency. Because this study focused on the personal, direct contact with past leaders of NAEYC, in-person or telephone interviews with past presidents were conducted to obtain a more complete history of NAEYC. Other sources such as journals, books, pamphlets, correspondence, and minutes were consulted for background information before the actual interviews were conducted. Later these sources were again used for verification of specific information.
