Abstract

The purpose of this study was to confirm the factors contributing to the scarcity of eligible, licensed applicants for the superintendency, and to confirm what barriers existed for those choosing to consider the superintendency as a career. Of the responding participants, Indiana public school superintendents, 67%, and licensed superintendents who are not currently serving as a superintendent, 45%, responded to eleven identified barriers, six factors that superintendents may face in the political arena, and five factors of stress. Each group also provided descriptive data that included age, gender, and current salary. Only public school superintendents were asked to provide data on their school community and their student enrollment (ADM). The analysis of data included descriptive statistics and the use oft-tests in which to determine is there significance between the two groups. The t-tests were performed at the .05 level of significance.
