Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the value and need of training in conflict management and conflict resolution as perceived by public school superintendents and public high school principals as to: (1) the kind and amount of training, (2) whether training is a desirable and beneficial activity, and (3) whether training should become a licensure requirement, (4) what delivery systems should be used to conduct the training program, and (5) what concepts and skills should be included in the training program. The population of this study comprised 301 public school corporations in the State of Indiana. Public school superintendents of each public school corporation were surveyed and one high school principal in each school corporation was surveyed. The survey was conducted in the fall of 1993. Survey results were analyzed using chi-square tests and t-tests at the.05 level of significance. The following conclusions were reached in the study: (1) Indiana superintendents and high school principals have undertaken little or no formal university classroom conflict resolution training in credit courses. (2) A majority of superintendents and high school principals has few classroom or workshop hours of conflict resolution training. (3) Many of the superintendents and high school principals have no recent involvement in some form of conflict resolution training. (4) Indiana school superintendents and high school principals agree as to the desirability and benefit of training in conflict resolution. (5) Indiana superintendents and high school principals perceive a need for continuing training in conflict resolution throughout the career of a school administrator. (6) Indiana school superintendents and high school principals perceive that conflict resolution training should be required for the administrative license. (7) Indiana superintendents and high school principals support the requirement that school administrators successfully complete one or more university courses in conflict resolution before being awarded the administrator license. (8) Indiana superintendents and high school principals generally agree as to the method of delivery of conflict resolution training. (9) Indiana superintendents and high school principals generally agree on the content of a conflict resolution training program.
