Abstract

The study was designed to examine the extent to which selected physical features of the general classroom in grades K-6 in the state of Indiana affect the quality of the learning environment as perceived by elementary school principals. In addition, it examined the extent to which selected aesthetic, comfort, and health and safety features affect the quality of the learning environment. Survey instruments were sent to 300 principals in K-6 schools selected at random; 232 instruments were returned and used in the analysis of data. The data collected for the study were tested using a one-way chi-square at the.05 level. Further, the responses for each item were tabulated and presented as percentages and mean scores. Based upon the findings, the following conclusions were made: (1) Rest rooms located in the classroom and a wet area for arts and crafts are essential physical features to be included in the construction and/or remodeling of a kindergarten classroom. (2) The provision for technology in the classroom, a silent reading area, an area for storage, and classroom arrangement by grade level are essential physical features to be included in the construction and/or remodeling of the general classroom for grades K-6. (3) Display areas for student work, student-oriented learning centers, and an abundance of maps and globes are aesthetic features to be included in the construction and/or remodeling of the general classroom. In addition, floor covering comprised of carpet or a combination of carpeting and linoleum, along with window blinds are features which promote the educational environment. (4) Acoustical treatment of ceilings, walls, and floors, control of thermal conditions, the location of the classroom in relation to the media center, and distance from other noise centers are comfort features which affect the learning environment. (5) Appropriate ventilation including air handling systems, more than one electrical outlet per wall, adjustable classroom lighting, windows which open, a science lab area, close rest room proximity to the classroom, and close proximity to an outside exit are features which provide a healthy environment in which to learn.
