Abstract
The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine which area of principal supports are important to retain high quality teachers. The three areas of focus were emotional supports, social supports, and instructional supports. This study was sent to all Indiana PK-12 public school teachers and 1,232 responded. This study determined if there was statistical significance between teacher perceptions of principal characteristics in the categories of emotional, social and instructional support and the retention level of teachers. This study shows that all three areas of principal support are significant in teacher retention. While all three are significant, instructional support ranked the lowest in significance. In addition, this study analyzed the years of experience of the teacher and the grade level of the teacher to determine significance regarding areas of principal support. The years of experience of the teacher did not evidence any difference in statistical significance in any area of support. This study shows that it is important for principals to support high quality teachers emotionally, socially and instructionally in order to retain them.
