Abstract

The study was designed to determine if incentive programs affect student grades, average daily attendance rates, and dropout rates in public, senior high schools in Indiana as perceived by the high school principal. The intent of the study was to determine whether a relationship existed between recognition, special privileges, and tangible awards relative to average daily attendance rates, dropout rates, the number of students generally earning As and Bs on report cards, and the number of students generally earning Cs and Ds as opposed to failing grades on report cards. Questionnaires were sent to all 231 senior high school principals; 174 surveys (75.3 percent) were returned and utilized in the analyses of data. The data collected for the study were tested using a one-way chi-square at the.05 level. In addition, the information gathered was tabulated with the combined percentages of great effect and some effect being ranked and presented in table form. Based upon the research study, the following conclusions were made: (1) A large percentage (77%) of public, senior high schools in the State of Indiana responding to the survey utilize a student incentive program. (2) Recognition, special privileges, and tangible awards have a perceived positive effect on average daily attendance rates for senior high schools that utilize a student incentive program. (3) Recognition, special privileges, and tangible awards have a perceived positive effect on dropout rates for senior high schools that utilize a student incentive program. (4) Recognition, special privileges, and tangible awards have a perceived positive effect on students generally earning all As and Bs at senior high schools that utilize a student incentive program. (5) Recognition, special privileges, and tangible awards have a perceived positive effect on students generally earning Cs and Ds as opposed to receiving failing grades at senior high schools that utilize a student incentive program.
