Abstract

This post-intentional phenomenological study examined the experiences of women who served on public higher Education governing boards, including how womens presence shaped the work of the board and what structures and practices impacted womens experiences. Results indicated that gender along with other social identities influence womens experiences on the board. Public higher Education board experience was meaningful and beneficial. Results also supported the value of womens contributions to board work including advocacy for underrepresented populations and enhanced board processes. Further, the research highlighted the importance of the political context in which women fulfill their board service, including influence from many stakeholders and accountability to constituents and state.
