Abstract
The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to explore how secondary principals experience the teacher hiring process, with special attention to the interviewing and selection of prospective teachers. This study sought to find how principals prefer to interview prospective teachers and what characteristics they find appealing in prospective teachers. Examined for this study were six principals who are currently practicing principals at the secondary level in Marion County, Indiana. Data for this study were collected through a series of three individual interviews with each principal. After completion of the 18 interviews, transcribing each of the interviews, reading the transcriptions and listening to the recordings, three main commonalities existed among the six principals. First, it is imperative to hire the right people for your school. Second, the interview process is a constantly evolving process. Third and final, the principals have had mentors who have been very impactful to them as it relates to the interviewing process.
