Abstract
This study was completed to determine the perceived need for airport board member training in the state of Indiana. Additionally, it sought to determine what topics would be the most important to include if training were perceived as needed. A survey instrument was created and then reviewed by two separate expert committees to obtain consultant validity. The survey consisted of twenty-one suggested topic areas and two questions that were developed to determine if the respondents perceive value in airport board member training. Reliability was assured by completing a Cronbach's Alpha, which indicated an acceptable level at .922. Two distinct populations were identified to answer the research questions. The populations consisted of seventy-eight airport managers and 348 airport board members all serving at publicly owned public-use airports in the state of Indiana. Thirty random samples were obtained from each of the two populations. A total of sixty individuals were contacted. The twenty-one topic areas were rank ordered by mean value and an analysis of variance (ANOVA) was completed to determine any statistical significance between the groups' mean scores on the topics. Additionally, a spearman correlation was completed that showed a strong relationship exists between the two samples and their ranking of the topic areas. An ANOVA was also completed for each of the two questions that sought to determine if the respondents perceived the need for training. After completing the statistical test it was determined that there is strong agreement among the study participants that airport board member training is perceived as needed by the respondents of this study. Additionally, all of the suggested topic areas would be important to include in any training that was developed.
