Abstract

Marshall, Illinois is a town built on the values of a rural community, with a forward-thinking approach to how to update and revitalize the city that they call home. Among the projects that were set forth in the Marshall Comprehensive Plan, implementing safe and reliable transport was one of them. To accomplish the goal of allowing residents of Marshall to experience more options for travel, as well as to highlight the city's important and historical sites, a mixed-use path would be perfect. Keeping in mind the sometimes limited budgets of small rural cities, a mixed use path is a perfect way to open up multiple options for transport in the form of biking, walking, and skating, it is also a relatively cheap alternative to a complete rehaul of the public transportation system that can be built upon in the future. Another aspect of public transportation that was mentioned in the Marshall Comprehensive Plan was implementing a Trolley that would connect to downtown areas of Marshall, Casey, and Martinsville. For the purposes of this project the Trolley would follow alongside the route established in the mixed-use path but on the road alongside it. Keeping in mind the ability to expand the route in the future to serve a larger area and connect with nearby communities.
