Abstract

For our Project, we are working with the City of Marshall. The City of Marshall owns and operates its own utilities. Approximately a year ago, the city experienced a leak on the west side of town. Due to overgrowth, they were unable to access the pipeline to repair it for several days. To prevent further extended outages, they are looking for a detailed evaluation of the pipeline right of way to ensure that they have adequate access to it, ensuring that they don’t experience such an outage again. They asked us to survey their gas pipeline from where their line taps off of the main line, along their main line, to where they hand off to Casey, Illinois. This is important because they have previously not been able to access the site of leaks for multiple days during key usage seasons, due to overgrowth of vegetation and erosion. We decided to partner with them and get a hands-on experience in the field. There was an initial approach we came up with but were unable to carry out, that we will touch on later. For our approach, we decided to look at it from the ground, in person, to get the best view of what the condition of the pipeline was. We would collect GPS points of any problem areas or points of interest, POIs, and where the markers were. Then we would revisit with a UAS anywhere we felt needed a better look.
