Text: “Here you will die,” they said/” You, who are so clever with words, /here you will starve to death!” “very well,” said coyote/” are all of you important men killing me/so that you alone will be leaders?/From each and every part of the world,/it will be only me that they laugh at!/and you” said Coyote to Earthmaker,/ “people form everywhere will say bad things about you!/They will say that you are the cleverest!”/And, having spoken, coyote remained silent. The others waded through the river/and clambered out onto the shore “Now then,” said Earthmaker, /” Keep listening, all of you, wherever you are. ’If, after four days, you hear no sounds from Coyote, /then he will have died.”/Then, they all went away. Though they listened through the first night, /by morning, there had been no sound from him. /again, they listened/until the next morning, /but there was no sound from him Meanwhile, coyote was still on the islet. /and, after awhile, he shat. A gopher head crawled out. /” what shall I do?” coyote asked the gopher head. /” give me good counsel!”
