CHARLES E. BROWN AFRICAN-AMERICAN CULTURAL CENTER, 2012 FORMERLY: United Mine Workers Union Building HISTORY The former United Mine Workers Building located at 308 North 8th Street is currently being used as a home for the center. Purchased in 1993, it houses the offices and resources of programs relevant to African-American historical and contemporary culture. The original building located at 551 North 9th Street was purchased by the University in 1970 and turned into the Center in 1973. In honor of a long-serving director of the center, the African-American Cultural Center was renamed after Charles Brown in 2012.
