Abstract
The Tree Species Sustainability Symposium project was developed through a partnership between BUS 100-004 students at Indiana State University and the City of Terre Haute as part of the Sustainable Cities Program. The city’s goal for this project was to strengthen public awareness of climate-appropriate tree species, promote biodiversity, and encourage community participation in preserving Terre Haute’s award-winning urban tree canopy. Students collaborated with city and university sustainability leaders to research native tree species best suited for Terre Haute’s environment, focusing on Sycamore, Red Maple, and Eastern Redbud trees. These species were selected for their ecological benefits, resilience to climate stressors, and contributions to biodiversity. Students examined how urban trees reduce heat, improve air quality, stabilize soil, and support wildlife while also enhancing neighborhood aesthetics. A key component of the project was community outreach. Students partnered with the LEAF Children’s Initiative and the ISU Afterschool Program to educate youth about sustainability and native tree species. Over 50 Sustainability Packets were distributed, each containing seeds for Sycamore, Red Maple, and Eastern Redbud trees. This hands-on approach connected environmental education with long-term community impact under the theme “Plant a Tree, Grow a Future.” Findings from the project highlight the importance of species diversity, climate resilience, and early education in sustaining Terre Haute’s tree canopy. Recommendations include continued public education campaigns, expansion of youth engagement initiatives, and increased promotion of native tree planting along waterways, neighborhoods, and public spaces. This project demonstrates how collaboration between students, city leaders, and educators can produce meaningful, sustainable outcomes for Terre Haute.
