Abstract
Psychological readiness is an important factor for returning to sport successfully following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. To date, no studies have determined the effect of the number of knee surgery to psychological readiness. The primary purpose of this investigation was to determine whether the number of knee surgeries impacts psychological readiness. The secondary purpose was to examine the relationship between the number of surgeries and knee function. Data was collected from participants on the women’s soccer teams at a local division Ⅰ, Ⅲ, and NAIA college. Inclusion criteria were 1) currently fully participating in activities without any limitations, and 2) must have had either at least one ACL reconstruction surgery or no history of knee surgery. Subjects were grouped according to the number of knee surgeries: no surgery or any history of surgery. Subjects were also divided into non-surgery, one ACL surgery, or multiple knee surgeries groups. The questionnaire included Anterior Cruciate Ligament Return to Sport After Injury (ACL-RSI) and International Knee Documentation Committee Subjective Knee Form (IKDC). There was a significant difference in ACL-RSI scores (P=0.047) and IKDC scores (P=0.006) between the non-surgery group and the surgery group. There was no significant difference in ACL-RSI scores between the non-surgery group, the one ACL surgery group, and the multiple surgeries group, but there was a trend toward decreasing scores with an increase in the number of surgeries (P=0.053). Also, there was a significant difference in IKDC scores between the non-surgery group and the one ACL surgery group (P=0.03) and between the non-surgery group and the multiple surgeries group (P=0.04). For patients who have multiple knee surgeries including ACL reconstruction, a more holistic rehabilitation program that treats the patient’s overall well-being by incorporating psychological components might be beneficial for their return to sport.
